Nope, it's definitely not a memory problem.  Even a memory leak in one
process does not cause excess CPU usage in another.  Could lead to
disk/swap thrashing, but not increased CPU in the order that I am seeing
it.  Besides during a recording session, when mplayer starts to need all
available CPU and gets really stuttery, I can stop it and restart it and
it starts out fine again, only to start creeping up in CPU usage.

If nobody has any ideas I guess I am just going to have to profile
mplayer and partners in crime as need be until I find the culprit.
