Well, I just gave 2.6.4-rc2-mm1 (gentoo) a try tonight, updated the cvs 
version of DirectFB, with same results as on 2.6.3-rc2. If I modprobe 
i2c-matroxfb, the only thing I'm left to do is blindly type "reboot", as 
my console gets garbled with vertical lines. In another gentoo 
instalation with a 2.4.22 kernel and DirectFB-0.9.20 this gives me a 
nice directfb console on the monitor and then I can play videos with 
mplayer on my TV, or start freevo.

I have the same console related options configured in my kernel.

This one doesn't work for me at all (not even in that installation where 
I can successfully modprobe i2c-matroxfb), but I don't know if this is 
not just another problem, not directly related to the fact that my 
monitor immediately gets garbled. I think my directfbrc file is 
irrelevant up to this point, as I no longer get the chance to start a 
directfb application. BTW, when it works (as I said, in that other linux 
installation), I just love it...

No, indeed, not 2.4 specific, I only thought it's for 2.4 as it says 
under "software requirements" "Latest Linux kernel, 2.4.24", and the 
little mismatch between the version history and the version and release 
date at the beginning of the document made me think it is not updated.
