I also think that directFB would be a good choice but only if the multi
application feature is available. This implies that the fusion kernel
patch is applied. While you can apply it yourself you will never succeed
in convincing the GNOME people as long as this patch isn't part of the
official kernel source tree. Nobody will seriously base his work on such
a critical element.
It amazes me why the directFB people never tried to submit this patch to
the kernel mailing list and see what others think about. IMO it's very
important that this patch gets now submitted because a feature freeze of
the kernel might happen anytime. I guess this kind of patch won't have a
chance to get into kernel 2.6 afterwards.
